Public Liability Insurance
Whereas Professional Indemnity Insurance is predominately aimed at people who give advice, Public Liability is more aimed at trades and trades people who carry out manual work. However, both areas can overlap and a trades person who gives advice may need both Professional Indemnity Insurance and Public Liability Insurance.
Public Liability covers damage or injury caused by work you carry out. For example, a Painter and Decorator spilling paint on a clients carpet would probably be able to claim on their public liability.
Cover can be taken from £1,000,000 normally up to £5,000,000. Local Authorities and the like are now asking trades people to provide evidence of £5 million of cover before accepting them as contractors. This is an increase from the £2million asked for last year.
Employers Liability can be added, and is normally insured for £10,000,000. This covers your employees, and protects yourself. It is a legal requirement if you employ anyone, and normally you have a certificate which must be displayed in a prominent place.
Two other items that can normally be added to Public Liability policies are Personal Injury (from £5,000) and cover for your tools (normally up to £2,500)
As with Professional Indemnity Insurance the list of Trades and occupations being covered by Public Liability is growing. If you’re not sure whether you Occupation should be covered, please ask.
