Motor Insurance
By law you have to hold Motor insurance to park or keep a vehicle where the public have access and on the public road. There are three major types of Motor Insurance:-
- Third Party Insurance- This is the minimum requirement under the Road Traffic Act and ONLY covers damage to a third party, not your own vehicle. Used to be the cheapest form of insurance but, there are now very few companies who offer this type of policy, which has made it quite expensive for the level of cover being offered.
- Third Party Fire & Theft- Covers the same as the above, and also theft of, or from your vehicle, and if the vehicle sets on fire. Useful for older vehicles and younger drivers as it keeps costs down. However, as with third party only, if you have an accident (not theft or fire) your own damage is not covered. Finally
- Fully Comprehensive- Covers everything mentioned above plus any damage to your own vehicle. Usually offers a courtesy vehicle if yours is off the road, and is the top level of cover available .
Whichever of the above you choose, the premium can be reduced by applying a voluntary excess (ie you pay the first £100.00 of each claim), or via No Claims Bonus. Your Bonus can also be protected so that you don’t lose it if you have a claim.
